This company is working on a 24 core ARM board with 32 gb of RAM. If it's cheap it could be cool to use as a low power server.
I am excited about RISC-V. At the moment there is pretty much one board for around $1k. Looks like also a couple of smaller/cheaper boards. But I think it's inevitably the future. Ooen source hardware.
Software is rarely multithreaded though. It takes a great deal of work to make efficient parallel operation software. Its common to throw the OpenMP library in, to 'automagically' make a program parallel, but my experiments showed it only marginally faster than running a single thread program. It was a few years ago, so might be much better now. My test was processing images, extracting Jpeg thumbnails from RAW image files.with 16 cores using code that processes images on each core in a seperate thread, it blew the doors off a single thread program that was made 'parallel' with OpenMP.
