Article about 'close friends' feature on Instagram.
According to the article, (which is likely accurate), friend lists/classifications are the most requested features of a social networking site, yet never used. For example this exists on Facebook. I remember starting to set it up years ago when the feature appeared, but I have never used it. There is not often a time when I want to post something to only certain people. I think this will likely happen with the Insragram feature.
There is a slider thing on HubZilla, I enabled it ages ago but I've never used it and honestly don't know what it actually does.
One feature I think would be 'more useful', instead of having levels of friendships or groups of friends or 'close friends' ... Should be the opposite. Should have an option to post to strangers only. General public, people who do not know you.
Strangers do not see your regular posts, and your contacts don't see your strangers posts. It's as simple as a checkbox 'strangers' on the post.
If it is actually interesting info, the software can figure out which friends you interact with, which friends posts you most often read, and vice-versa. Maintaining a 'close friends' list and actually posting to it sounds like a pain in the ass. Instagram adds “close friends” to let you share stories to a more limited group
